While OpenSea may be the largest decentralized marketplace for NFTs, it isn't the most ecofriendly. OpenSea is mainly based on the Ethereum blockchain, which, for example, selling just a single-edition artwork on Ethereum has a carbon footprint starting at around 100 KgCO2 — which is equivalent to a 1-hour flight! —and depending on the platform, the emissions can reach those of a long-haul flight.

And on top of all of that, selling an edition of 100 works has a carbon footprint of over 10 tonnes CO2, which is more than the per capita annual footprint of someone in the EU —including all emissions from industry and trade.

 

Now imagine how much of a carbon footprint all those NFT collections of 1,000 to upwards of 10,000 NFTS are leaving? 

Creature Content Co. cares a lot about the environment and ensures we humans don't leave too much of a carbon footprint on the planet. One way of offsetting that carbon footprint is by planting trees, which you can read a little more about under the Ecological Footprint Subsidization section. 

 

That's why Creature Content is proud to announce that we will be donating a portion of each NFT sale to the organization One Tree Planted and will be doing our part by planting trees in various regions across the world.

A carbon offset broadly refers to a reduction in GHG emissions (greenhouse gasses) – or an increase in carbon storage (i.e. through land restoration or the planting of trees) – that is used to compensate for emissions that occur elsewhere. Through reforestation and the planting of trees, Creature Content will be reducing the carbon offset through reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. Reforestation is how Creature Content will be offsetting the carbon footprint that OpenSea and the Ethereum network create.

Apart from just using an eco-friendly NFT marketplace, Creature Content Co. is dedicated to helping restore the environment.

 

This is why Creature Content Co. is proud to announce that for every Creature Content Co. NFT purchased, one tree will be planted. The goal of planting trees is part of helping to save the ecosystem through reforestation. Reforestation helps the environment by guaranteeing or accelerating the re-establishment of healthy forest structures by regrowing the forest canopy and preserving biodiversity within the ecosystem.

Since the Ethereum network leaves such a large carbon footprint, Creature Content Co. is donating a portion of all profits and will plant 1 tree for each NFT purchased.

Until that can be created and accomplished, Creature Content Co. is doing their part through being transparent and through supporting reforestation.

-Lazy Minting: Lazy minting is not dramatically better than normal minting, however, it does give off around 2x-3x less of a carbon footprint. This is accomplished by not creating an NFT until its first purchase, something Creature Content Co. has done.

-Various Layer 2 (L2) Scaling Optimizations: a vital instrument for improving network performance, this is done by running a different network on top of the Ethereum network at the same time. Ethereum layer 2 scaling solutions could serve different functions such as off-chain computation and scalability of  payments. Polygon is a great example of this, and it's beneficial to both parties as there's no gas fee.
